It's an open back, 10" Dia body, with an Ebony fretboard and either Maple or Walnut (guess) neck. Through the years, it was passed down to several family members, one of whom was a regular on the Arthur Smith Radio Show on WBT Radio in Charlotte, NC in the early 1950's. It was originally owned (as far back as I can trace, by word of mouth and one photograph to justify lineage) by my Great-Great-Great Grandmother in Western North Carolina. I love this guitar, it has much history and many stories attached to it since 1990 when I bought it. On the block supporting the neck is the serial number 65401 but this looks like it's stencilled in rather than stamped into the wood. The Washburn has the "George Washburn" belt logo stamped into the back bracing and "NEW MODEL" stamped in too. The Martin wins, no doubt, but the Washburn puts up an honourable challenge. It's loud, bright with a beautiful balance and gives my 1974 Martin 0-16 "New Yorker" a good run for it's money. It's scratched, faded, tatty, the lower bout is bowing slightly where the bridge is lifting and the action on the fretboard near the body is just plain cruel. There are a few cracks in the top, numerous repairs on the sides and repaired cracks in the back. One was all original, no repairs, a bit faded but otherwise in prefect condition. I've had two of these, both from Marc Silber in Berkley, California. I'm trying to date an old Washburn "new model" and despite much on the subject here and elsewhere I have so far been unable so I'm reaching out for some expertise.
